This article intends to give the reader a brief introduction on how to install and configure the EPEL upstream version of the NRPE agent on SuSE Enterprise Linux (SLES) versions 11 and 12.
Dangerously outdated material
Historically, OP5 had compiled and packaged the NRPE agent for a large number of Linux distributions. In the second half of 2014 we stopped creating our own agents. This related into the Nagios/Naemon split and changes in resources to keep up with security revisions.
As of May 2018, this document needed intense revision. Thus we have hidden the majority of it until we have tested and confirmed a solution. Thank you for understanding.
Linux server monitoring with SNMPv3
Another approach to monitoring servers running SLES is to use the SNMP (v3) protocol. This simplifies security configuration for Linux hosts, though it adds the complexity of MIBs and OIDs. You can find some configuration material here.
